Webinar 14 December: TUE procedure and examples of when TUE is needed

The final webinar in the 2022 FAI Fly Clean series will take place on Wednesday 14 December at 14:00 UTC and will cover the topic of Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

With the objective to share detailed information on TUE procedure, the FAI Secretariat aims to help FAI members, FAI athletes and their entourage to navigate the systems in place for therapeutic use exemption for substances on the WADA prohibited list.

This final webinar in a series of three will be jointly hosted by FAI Anti-doping Manger and Geoffrey W. McCarthy MD MBA DipAvMed, who is the FAI TUE Panel Chair and an expert in this field. Together with they will go into detail about common medications which contain prohibited substances and share information on how to apply for a TUE, with practical examples and case studies.

Athletes hold responsibility for any prohibited substance they take, attempt to take, or is found in their system. Many common medications contain substances on the WADA Prohibited List, and therefore require athletes to acquire a TUE, which gives them an exemption to continue taking the treatment on medical grounds, which allows them to continue to compete.

Gaining knowledge for competition participants at all levels (supporters, clubs, event organisers, FAI members) is vital to help athletes avoid a positive test, and the webinar will explain in detail the procedures involved in acquiring TUE.

Key takeaways for attendees will be:

  • Find out where to access reliable information
  • Gain knowledge of treatments/substances which may require TUE
  • Understand procedures and paperwork involved in TUE requests
  • Discover the timelines to acquire a TUE
  • Learn what happens if TUE is denied

FAI AND THE WORLD ANTI-DOPING AGENCY (WADA)

FAI became a WADA signatory in 2011. This implies commitments for in-competition testing, out of competition testing and education which are included within FAI’s Fly Clean Programme.

FAI’s anti-doping rules are based on the WADA template ‘Model Rules for International Federations’. Our compliance is audited annually and non-compliance has serious consequences.
