Safety Officer
Since March 2023 Fabio Loro from Italy is appointed the CIVL Safety officer.
A paragliding pilot since 1990 Fabio Loro also has some experience as a hang glider as well. He stopped competing before the GPS era and now is completely engaged as a paragliding instructor to run his own school in Bassano, Italy. As a local representative of FIVL (Italian Free Flight Federation), Fabio has been involved in safety issues since mid-90s. Fabio worked for 5 years in a paragliding and hang-gliding harness factory, witnessing the dawn of the back protector's tests. He was an MD or a member of the organising team of at least 10 editions of Trofeo Montegrappa and during the last 15 years followed several FAI Cat 1 competitions as a Steward or a Jury Member.
Safety Officers of the Past
Former Navy commander, Mitchell Shipley was then an advanced technology research manager in a university laboratory. He was an advanced-rated hang glider instructor, lead flight instructor, tug pilot in a main US flying center, and electric tow winches manufacturer. Hang gliding since 1988, he was a national team member in the 2013 Worlds and then a team leader. He practised also skydiving, scuba-diving, and motorcycling. He managed the US incident report database and has been a CIVL safety officer in 2017-2022.
Raymond Caux was a hang gliding technical adviser at the FFVL, a team member, and then team leader in several world championships from 2003 to 2011. CIVL safety officer from 2012 to 2017, he first created and then managed the safety pages.
Dennis Pagen has been a US delegate, CIVL hang gliding committee member or leader and competition steward for years. He implemented the hang gliding sprog setting policy. He overlooked the CIVL internal forum.
